BB Glow Facial: What It Is, How It Works, Side Effects and Results
By Dr. Harish B (B.D.S, F.A.M, F.H.T, MBA-HM), Aesthetic Physician and Cosmetologist, Livglam Aesthetic Clinic, Jayanagar, Bangalore.
A BB glow facial is a skin treatment that uses very fine needles to place a tinted serum into the top layer of your skin. Your face then looks evenly toned, a bit like you are wearing a light BB cream. The effect is semi-permanent and fades over months. It is not a regular facial, because the needles open the skin.
Many people first see it in Instagram reels, where the skin looks perfect. Real life is less dramatic, and more useful to know. Below, Dr. Harish B of Livglam Aesthetic Clinic, Jayanagar, Bangalore, explains how the treatment works, what can go wrong, who should skip it and what results actually look like.
What Is BB Glow Treatment?
BB glow treatment is a cosmetic procedure from South Korea that combines microneedling with a skin-coloured serum. Tiny needles make shallow channels in the skin, and a tinted serum settles into them. The result is a soft, even tone that fades slowly. Think of it as a very light, short-lived tint, not a cure for skin problems.
Here are the basics in one place:
- BB stands for blemish balm. That is the full form of the "BB" in BB cream, the tinted cream this treatment tries to copy.
- The tool is a microneedling pen fitted with very short needles. Clinics often call this nano-needling.
- Two things go into the skin: a booster serum with vitamins, and a BB pigment matched to your skin tone.
- At Livglam, a numbing cream is applied first, and a full-face session takes about 1.5 to 2 hours.
Microneedling itself is a medical treatment. The American Academy of Dermatology describes it as using tiny needles to puncture the skin, which pushes the body to make collagen as it heals. BB glow adds colour to that process. If you want to read about the glow it can give, see our post on the benefits of BB glow for an even skin tone.
How Is a BB Glow Facial Done?
At Livglam, a BB glow facial starts with cleansing, a gentle peel and a pH-balancing foam. A booster serum goes in next, then the tinted BB pigment is pressed into the skin with a fine-needle pen. A soothing mask, 15 minutes of LED light and a repair cream finish the session. Most people go back to work the same day.
These are the eight steps of a session at Livglam:
- Cleansing to remove oil, sweat and makeup.
- A gentle peel to clear dead cells from the surface.
- A neutralising foam to bring the skin's pH back to balance.
- A booster ampoule with vitamins A, B, D and E, picked for your skin type.
- BB pigment infusion, using one shade or a mix of two that matches your skin.
- A soothing mask to calm the skin and add moisture.
- LED light therapy for 15 minutes.
- A repair cream on the treated skin.
The "BB glow machine" that people search for is usually this needle pen. The pen is the easy part. The skill lies in picking the right shade and keeping the needle depth even across the face.
Shade matching matters a lot on Indian skin, because tones vary so much even within one family. Ask for a shade test along your jawline before the full session. The AAD also notes that after microneedling, lighter skin tends to turn red while darker skin may show darker patches for a while, so a small test area tells you how your skin reacts.
What Are the Side Effects of BB Glow Treatment?
The common BB glow side effects are redness, mild swelling, a sunburn-like feeling and dryness for a few days. Less common risks are infection, allergic reaction, patchy colour and small lumps called granulomas. The risk is higher when the person doing it has no medical training or the serum is not sterile.
Here is what the evidence says:
- The American Academy of Dermatology (page updated 2023) says redness and swelling after microneedling usually settle within a few days to a week. When someone without medical training does it, the risk of infection, scarring and long-lasting skin discolouration goes up.
- The US Food and Drug Administration (page current as of October 2024) says no colour additives are approved for injection into the skin. It treats permanent makeup as a type of tattoo and lists infections, allergic reactions, granulomas and keloids among the risks.
- Dermatologists quoted by NewBeauty (updated 2022) warned that the pigment can trigger foreign-body granulomas and that the colour can fade unevenly.
- Livglam's own treatment page lists redness and temporary pigmentation as the expected risks.
A BB glow facial puts pigment into the top layer of the skin. That is why skin doctors compare it with semi-permanent makeup and treat it with the same caution.
Signs that your BB glow treatment has gone wrong
See a doctor quickly if you notice pus, redness that keeps spreading, fever, painful lumps, or dark or light patches that have not faded after two weeks. Do not try to scrub the colour off. That only damages healing skin.
Who Should Not Get a BB Glow Facial?
Skip BB glow if you have pus-filled pimples, a skin infection, a fresh tan or sunburn, keloid scars or skin that heals slowly. People with a weak immune system, those having treatment for skin cancer in the area, and anyone who took isotretinoin in the past month should also wait. Your doctor may ask for a longer gap.
This list follows the AAD's advice on microneedling:
- Active acne with painful or pus-filled pimples. Treat the acne first.
- A skin infection, or frequent cold sores around the area. Needles can spread infection.
- A fresh tan or sunburn.
- Keloids or a history of poor healing.
- A weakened immune system, or radiation or skin cancer treatment in the area.
- Isotretinoin in the past month. [CONFIRM: Livglam's required gap after isotretinoin]
Tell your doctor about any retinol, acne medicine or blood thinners you use. They change how your skin reacts to needles.
BB Glow Before and After: What Results Really Look Like
Right after your first BB glow facial, you will see a light, even tint, while the skin stays pink for a day or two. The tint looks most natural once the redness settles. BB glow can make dark spots look softer, but it does not treat the cause of melasma or deep pigmentation. More sessions build up coverage.
A realistic timeline looks like this:
- Day 0 to 1: the skin is pink and a little tight, and the tint is visible. Do not wash or apply anything for 24 hours.
- Days 2 to 7: redness and swelling settle. The AAD says this usually takes a few days to a week.
- Week 2: the final tint shows by about two weeks, as per Livglam's treatment page.
- Weeks 3 to 12: for more coverage, Livglam suggests 3 to 4 sessions, once every 3 to 4 weeks.
How long the tint lasts depends on your skin, sun exposure and how often you exfoliate. We cover that in detail in how long BB glow lasts.
When you look at before and after photos online, check that both photos use the same light and angle and have no filters. A tint that looks flawless under a ring light can look different in daylight. [CONFIRM: add consented Livglam before and after photos here]
BB Glow vs HydraFacial vs Foundation: Which Is Better?
They do different jobs. Foundation covers spots for a day and washes off. A HydraFacial cleans, exfoliates and hydrates the skin surface without needles, so it adds no colour. BB glow leaves a light tint that lasts for weeks, but it uses needles and pigment. Choose based on whether you want coverage or healthier skin.

Can You Do a BB Glow Treatment at Home?
It is better not to. BB glow kits sold online come with needle pens and tinted serums, but dermatologists say at-home microneedling can cause infections. You cannot check whether the pigment is pure or sterile, and the US FDA has not approved any colour additive for injection into the skin. A wrong shade or uneven pressure can also leave patches.
The American Academy of Dermatology lists at-home cosmetic procedures among the most worrying skin care trends, and one of its dermatologists calls at-home microneedling dangerous because of the infection risk. Search results for "BB glow kit" are full of shopping listings, and none of them can tell you how deep to go on your skin.
How to Care for Your Skin After a BB Glow Treatment
For the first 24 hours, do not wash your face or apply moisturiser, sunscreen or makeup. From the next day, use a gentle cleanser and sunscreen, and reapply sunscreen every two hours when you are outdoors. Avoid strong sun for two weeks, and skip retinol, scrubs, saunas and swimming for one week.
Livglam's aftercare rules, in order:
- First 24 hours: no washing, moisturiser, sunscreen or makeup.
- From day 2: gentle cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen. Reapply sunscreen every two hours outdoors.
- First week: no retinol or Retin-A, no scrubs or exfoliators, no sauna, steam bath or swimming.
- First one to two days: no heavy exercise.
- First two weeks: avoid long hours in the sun.

Frequently asked questions
1. What is BB glow treatment?
BB glow treatment is a semi-permanent tint for the face. A fine-needle pen places a skin-coloured serum into the top layer of the skin, so the face looks evenly toned without makeup. It came from South Korea. The colour fades over months, so most people need repeat sessions to keep the look.
2. What is the full form of BB glow?
BB stands for blemish balm. BB cream is a tinted moisturiser that evens out skin tone, and BB glow is named after it because the treatment tries to give the same look without applying cream every day. "Glow" refers to the soft, even finish the tinted serum leaves on the skin.
3. Is BB glow treatment safe?
BB glow treatment is lower risk when a trained doctor does it with sealed, sterile products on healthy skin. It is not risk-free. The US FDA has not approved any colour additive for injection into the skin, and the risks include infection, allergic reaction, patchy colour and granulomas. A patch test before the full session is a must.
4. Is BB glow treatment good for skin?
BB glow can make skin look more even for a while, and microneedling can help the skin make collagen as it heals. But it is mainly a cosmetic tint, not a treatment. It will not cure acne, melasma or deep pigmentation, and it is not suitable for skin with active acne, infection or sunburn.
5. Which is better, BB glow or HydraFacial?
Neither is better overall, because they do different jobs. A HydraFacial cleans, exfoliates and hydrates without needles and adds no colour. BB glow uses needles to leave a light tint that lasts for weeks. For healthier, cleaner skin choose a HydraFacial. For an even tone without makeup, BB glow is the option.
6. Can I do BB glow treatment at home?
It is safer not to. Home kits include needle pens and tinted serums, but dermatologists warn that at-home microneedling can cause infections. You cannot check if the pigment is pure or sterile, and a wrong shade or uneven pressure can leave patches. A trained doctor in a clean setting is the safer choice.
7. Can I wash my face after BB glow treatment?
No, not for the first 24 hours. Do not wash your face or apply moisturiser, sunscreen or makeup on the first day, so the serum can settle. From the next day, use a gentle cleanser and sunscreen, and avoid scrubs, retinol, saunas and swimming for one week.
Final Thoughts
A BB glow facial gives a light, even tint that saves you from daily makeup for a while. It is still a needle treatment that puts pigment into your skin, so the person doing it and the products they use matter more than any before and after photo.
If you are tempted, start small. Ask for a patch test and a shade test, give your skin two weeks to settle, and only then decide on more sessions.
